Do I Need RAID?- FAQ’s.

This is an issue that has been asked again and again by users who are new to this term or don’t clearly perceive its benefits and whether or not they should use RAID or not on their dedicated servers.

Here I’ll try my best to answer this question and help you understand its importance as well. First we will try to understand:

Here I’ll attempt my best to answer this question and assist you perceive its importance also. First we are going to understand:

What is RAID?

RAID stands for redundant array of independent disks wherever the data is mirrored to multiple disks for protective data just in case of disk failure.

In simple words, RAID is a backup system in which an additional hard drive is attached with the server which carries all the data on the disk. It is a data storage technology where multiple disks are used for data redundancy and improving server performance.

This is useful once the drive has problems, if in case one of the HDD fails the opposite drives gets live and starts behaving as primary HDD so you will not face any downtime in case of HDD fail.

Types of RAID
There different type RAID levels based on the number of disk drives used and the function it performs. We’ll briefly explain some of them here:

RAID 1

RAID 1 comes with Data Mirroring while not parity and needs minimum 2 drives. It is useful when you need more reliability as compared to data storage capacity.

RAID 5

RAID 5 comes with Block Level striping with distributed parity and needs minimum 3 drives. It uses all drives except one to operate therefore once there’s disk failure the data will scan from the distributed parity and there’s no data loss.

What if I take advantage of R1Soft Backup?

This all depends on what you’re using the backup resolution for. If you are using backup solution just for disaster recovery to avoid downtime then you may not need a backup solution after you are using RAID. There would be no downtime in case of HDD failure however if in case whole server goes down or if you mistakenly delete a file, database etc. R1Soft would be helpful in restoring the data as soon as possible.

However, you’d not be able to access the data from the RAID disk as you’ll be able to do from your backup solution. Therefore if you would like to be able to access your backup data for different purposes then it’s recommended that you simply use a backup solution for your data separately.
