How to transfer your website from Plesk to cPanel

Copy every file on your local machine:

You must use a standard FTP client to take a custom backup of every file on your local machine. Login to the FTP using either your domain name or the IP provided to you with the email that was sent to you regarding the server details. Then using the FTP username and password login to your FTP account.

Depending on the FTP client, you should ideally see the local hard disk partition in the column on the left hand side, whereas on the top right box you can view the content present on your server or the hosting account. You must make an easily identifiable folder for the backups over your local machine and then download the content present on the server in that.

Your website content can usually be found under the httpdocs directory, incase you also have subdomains, you are also required to copy the content as well.

You can drag-drop the httpdocs folder to the appropriate destination folder on your local machine. The time taken for the process to complete would vary depending on the file size. Once done, you must then copy the entire directory of subdomains or choose particular one’s depending on your requirements.

How to Export the database(s) ?

  • You are required to login to your Plesk control panel first of all.

Note : It might be possible that the username and password for Plesk control panel and FTP account are different. If they aren’t you make sure that you change it asap, failing to do so would weaken your server security.

  • The page would then be refreshed automatically, wherein you can find the domain name at the bottom.
  • You are now required to hit the Databases Icon seen in the service section
  • Now choose the appropriate database from the list.
  • Now, you must Hit the DB WebAdmin tool option. Then, in the top left of the screen you should be able to find the database name.
  • The database tables would then be displayed on the screen, you must then Hit the Export button located at the top. You should then be able to see multiple options.
  • Locate the Select All option, wherein all the databases would be selected. Then you must check (?) the box against “add drop tables” option before exporting your database. Further, by default the database would be exported in an SQL format, incase you want it to be stored in a different format, you must tick the appropriate box in the tables list menu.
  • Once you are sure about all the above mentioned options, you must hit the “Save As File” and “Go” tab located at the bottom of the page. You would then be asked for the exact location where you intend to store your MySQL database dump. Choose your intended destination on the local machine and hit Save again.

There are occasions where you might have multiple databases, in that case you need to repeat the above

How to Restore a website on cPanel hosting account ?

If you intend to restore your website over a cPanel hosting account, you must upload the files and databases to the new account on the server.

Once you upload the httpdocs files and subdomain folders under the public_html directory you must import your databases. But before doing so, you are required to to create a new database via your cPanel >> MySQL databases.

Once you are done creating the database, you are now required to Import the MySQL dump file.

Once both ie. the files/folders and the database is successfully uploaded to the server you can make the necessary changes to the settings to suite your requirements.
