Following are the Steps to install and configure a VPN Server on Windows 2008 R2 has changed to some extent as compared with Windows 2003. Although installing a VPN server in Windows 2008 server is not too difficult at all. You have to install RRAS via. server manager as a \u2018Role\u2019 first.<\/p>\n

Steps to Install the Services\u00a0<\/strong>Essential\u00a0<\/strong>for running a VPN Server<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Step 1<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Go to the \u201cServer Manager<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Look for the option termed \u201cAction<\/strong>\u201d, click it and proceed with\u00a0Adding Roles<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 3<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 You would be presented with an installation wizard. It is advisable to go through the requirements first and only then proceed further by clicking\u00a0Next.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 4<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Upon clicking, you should be able to see a box titles \u201cSelect Server Roles<\/strong>\u201c, here you must check-box against the option \u201cNetwork Policy and Access Services<\/strong>\u201d and hit the \u201cNext<\/strong>\u201d button to proceed.<\/p>\n

Step 5<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Next, you are required to check the box against the option named \u201cRouting and Remote Access Services<\/strong>\u201d. Upon checking the box two sub-boxes namely \u201cRemote Access Service<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cRouting<\/strong>\u201d would appear, you must also check those and hit the\u00a0Next\u00a0<\/strong>button to proceed.<\/p>\n

Step 6<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 It would then ask you to \u201cConfirm Installation Selection\u201d<\/strong>, in there a summary of anything that has been chosen for installation would be presented, you can cross-check everything here.<\/p>\n

Step 7<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 If everything is as per the expectations, you may proceed with clicking the \u201cInstall<\/strong>\u201d button. Upon completion of the installation process, you may close the setup wizard.<\/p>\n

Step 8<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Now, you are expected to return to the Server Manager wherein you must right-click on \u201cConfigure and Enable Routing and Remote Access<\/strong>\u201c and hit the\u00a0Next\u00a0<\/strong>button.<\/p>\n

Step 9<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Hit Next on the window \u201cRouting and Remote Access Wizard<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n

Step 10<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Choose \u201cCustom Configuration<\/strong>\u201d and hit \u201cNext<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Step 11<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Check-box against \u201cVPN access<\/strong>\u201d and Hit \u201cNext<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

Step 12<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Hit the \u201cFinish<\/strong>\u201d button and click the \u201cStart Service<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

The above steps is the complete procedure, which redirect you to the main Server\u00a0 Manager screen. This will show that the Routing And Remote access is up and running.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You can also change the settings in Firewall to allow the ports which is necessary to run a VPN server. The following are the required ports :<\/strong><\/p>\n

Port\u00a01723 TCP<\/strong>
\nPort\u00a047 GRE<\/strong><\/p>\n
